A Rare Astronomical Phenomenon
The world is expected to witness the moon turning red during a total lunar eclipse on Thursday evening, a rare astronomical event that will be followed by a partial solar eclipse in two weeks.
What is the “Blood Moon”?
This eclipse, known as the “Blood Moon,” will be the first of the year and will be fully visible from the Americas, as well as most areas surrounding the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and parts of Western Europe and Africa.
How Does This Phenomenon Occur?
This astronomical phenomenon occurs approximately twice a year when the sun, earth, and moon align perfectly, with the moon in its full phase.
What Will Happen During the Eclipse?
The moon will slip into the earth’s shadow, blocking sunlight and gradually diminishing the planet’s white glow. However, the moon does not completely disappear, as the earth continues to reflect sunlight onto the moon, resulting in a reddish hue.
Reason for the Red Color
The coppery color seen on the moon is due to sunlight being filtered through the earth’s atmosphere, where the red component is bent and refracted in the earth’s shadow cast onto the moon.
Duration of the Eclipse
The eclipse lasts about 6 hours, while the totality phase, when the moon is entirely in the earth’s shadow, may take more than an hour.
Upcoming Solar Eclipse
On March 29, a partial solar eclipse will occur, covering part of the earth, with visibility expected over eastern Canada, Europe, northern Russia, and northwest Africa. A solar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon, and earth align perfectly, but this time the moon is positioned between the sun and the earth, partially or completely obscuring the star.
How to Observe the Eclipse?
To enjoy a clear view of the eclipse, it is recommended to use binoculars or a telescope to see detailed features on the moon’s surface, such as the craters that will temporarily appear red.
Tips for Capturing Photos
To capture moments of this astronomical event, NASA recommends placing your smartphone on a tripod and setting the camera to take long exposure shots ranging from several seconds at a minimum.
