FARGO, N.D. – April 8, 2025 – Operations on the Keystone pipeline have been halted following the discovery of an oil spill in southeastern North Dakota, officials confirmed Tuesday. The incident marks another setback for the controversial pipeline system that has experienced several spills in recent years.
The shutdown was initiated Tuesday morning when a worker at a pump station detected a significant pressure drop, prompting immediate investigation. The spill was subsequently located in a rural agricultural field approximately 60 miles southwest of Fargo.
“Containment resources have been deployed to the site, and the affected segment of the pipeline has been isolated,” said a spokesperson for the pipeline operator in a statement released to the press. “Our primary focus remains on ensuring public safety and minimizing environmental impact.”
While authorities have not yet determined the volume of oil released, the pipeline typically transports approximately 624,000 barrels of crude oil daily from Canada to U.S. refineries. Environmental teams are monitoring a nearby stream, though initial reports suggest the spill remains confined to the agricultural field.
The U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has launched an investigation into the cause of the leak and is evaluating the operator’s compliance with safety regulations.
Energy analysts warn that the shutdown could potentially impact fuel prices across the Midwest, with diesel and jet fuel supplies particularly vulnerable to disruption. “Depending on the duration of this shutdown, we could see pressure on regional fuel prices in the coming weeks,” noted an industry expert familiar with the situation.
The Keystone pipeline system has faced ongoing scrutiny regarding its safety record. Environmental advocates have pointed to this incident as further evidence supporting their longstanding concerns about the pipeline’s operation.
Local officials have scheduled a press conference for tomorrow morning to provide updates on containment efforts and potential impacts to surrounding communities.
This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
