Microsoft announced that the Skype application will be discontinued in May.
In a statement released today, Friday, reported by CNBC, the company stated that the 21-year-old calling and messaging service will shut down on May 5.
The software company encouraged Skype users to transition to the free Teams application.

Jeff Teper, President of Microsoft 365 Apps and Platforms, stated, “We felt it was time for a change because we can be simpler for the market and our customer base, and we can deliver more innovation faster just by focusing on evolution.”
Skype gained attention in the early 2000s for providing people with a way to talk without paying phone companies, but it struggled in the mobile era and did not experience a significant comeback during the pandemic.
